Casuarina Beach, on the island of Karainagar at the north-western tip of the Jaffna peninsula, is the north's best swimming beach. Named for the feathery casuarina trees that line its shore and whistle in the sea breeze, the beach shelves so gently that you can wade a hundred metres out and still stand waist-deep - safe, warm bathing that draws Jaffna families in numbers every weekend and poya day. The water is a milky aquamarine over white sand, and the shallows are dotted with wading birds at dawn. Reached by causeway from the mainland, Karainagar offers a slice of peninsula life along the way: palmyrah groves, kovils, and salt flats. Facilities are modest (changing rooms, a few snack stalls), so bring what you need and settle in for an unhurried northern beach day.
