Tiny Nainativu, twenty minutes by ferry from the Jaffna peninsula, packs two of Sri Lanka's most important shrines onto one sacred shoreline. For Buddhists this is Nagadeepa, one of the sixteen holiest sites on the island - the Buddha himself is said to have visited on his second journey to Lanka, settling a war between two Naga kings over a gem-set throne; the serene Nagadeepa Purana Vihara marks the spot. A short walk away rises the towering gopuram of Nagapooshani Amman Kovil, a major Hindu temple to the goddess Ambal rebuilt in dazzling Dravidian style, its June–July festival drawing pilgrims by the boatload. The sight of Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims sharing the same small ferries to their neighbouring shrines is one of the island's quietly moving scenes.
