About Elephant Pass
Elephant Pass is geography as destiny: the narrow isthmus and causeway where the Jaffna peninsula hangs onto the mainland, named for the elephant herds once driven across its shallows for export from Jaffna's ports. Whoever held the Pass held the north - the Dutch built a fort here (its traces remain), and in the civil war the crossing saw some of the conflict's largest battles, changing hands at terrible cost. Today's visitor finds a place of wind, salt, and remembrance: the great lagoon spreads its flats to either side (flamingo country in season), salterns glitter, and memorials mark the passage - including the monument to Corporal Gamini Kularatne, whose lone action against an armoured bulldozer in 1991 is commemorated beside the preserved machine itself, and the soaring national war memorial by the road. Most travellers pause here en route to Jaffna; the pause, with its views and its weight, is worth making deliberate.
