Point Pedro is where Sri Lanka runs out: the island's northernmost point, marked by a small monument and a colonial lighthouse on Sakkotai Cape, with nothing beyond the reef but the Bay of Bengal stretching toward India. The journey matters as much as the marker - the drive up through the Jaffna peninsula's palmyrah groves and walled gardens ends in a busy little fishing town where boats unload on the beach and the smell of drying fish rides the constant wind. East of town, the strange Manalkadu dunes - a miniature desert - half-bury the ruins of a Dutch-era church, and the beaches this far north are utterly empty. For travellers who like edges of maps, standing at the top of the island (508 kilometres from Dondra Head at the bottom) has a satisfying finality that no famous sight can match.
