The Ceylon Tea Museum fills the 1925 Hantane tea factory, a four-storey monument of timber floors and iron pillars on the hills just above Kandy - the right building for the story it tells. The lower floors preserve the thundering machinery of the classic factory - withering lofts, rollers, dryers, and sorters, lovingly restored and demonstrated - while the galleries above trace the audacious history: James Taylor, the Scot who planted Ceylon's first commercial tea field at Loolecondera in 1867 (his enormous personal effects and photographs are here), and Thomas Lipton, who sold the island's leaf to the world. The top floor rewards the climb with a tasting room and a telescope-equipped panorama over Kandy's ranges. For travellers heading on to the tea country, an hour here turns every estate view that follows into a story you can read.
