Kandy Lake is the last grand gesture of Sri Lankan royalty: King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the final monarch, flooded the paddies before the Temple of the Tooth in 1807 to create his Kiri Muhuda - the 'sea of milk' - complete with the parapet of white clouds (the walakulu wall) scalloping its rim and an island pavilion whispered to have housed the royal harem. The kingdom fell eight years later; the lake remained, and two centuries have grown it into the city's beloved centrepiece. The 3.2-kilometre circuit path is Kandy's daily ritual - monks, joggers, courting couples, and tourists sharing the shade of the giant rain trees - with the Tooth Temple's golden roof, the hills' colonial villas, and the white Buddha of Bahirawakanda composing themselves across the water from every bench. Egrets stalk the shallows, monitor lizards commute, and at dusk the fruit-bat squadrons cross to roost: the whole city, one easy loop.
