Munneswaram, just inland from Chilaw, is one of the Pancha Ishwaram - the five historic temples of Shiva said to ring Sri Lanka since deep antiquity - and Ramayana tradition gives it a redemptive role: here, they say, Rama halted after his victory over Ravana and prayed to Shiva to lift the sin of killing, on divine advice installing lingams to cleanse the taint of war. The main kovil, rebuilt over centuries in classic Dravidian style, anchors a complex of five shrines (one Buddhist), and its four-week Munneswaram festival in August–September is among the island's great religious spectacles - fire-walking, kavadi dancing, water-cutting rites, and processions that draw Hindus, Buddhists, and the curious in their tens of thousands. Paired with Chilaw's lagoon-side fish markets and the coast road north, it makes a rewarding cultural detour between Negombo and Kalpitiya.
